The pace bowler has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.
The Australian chief selector the selector has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming Ashes series.
Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.
Previous updates from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series set to start on the 21st of November in the WACA.
Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about his chances of participating.
"It's clear that the window is narrowing and there are permutations at play, not just his injury, but other factors as well," he commented.
"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a significant role. Ideally starting in Perth. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."
Injury History
Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.
There is a track record of recurring issues, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of several home seasons in a limited period.
Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to make the squad for the series.
He mentioned that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the opener.
Alternative Arrangements
If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.
The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of soreness in his side.
The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."
"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.
"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs in any case. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for a short period, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
